REGION 9 MURPHYS North side of Highway 4 starting at west end of Utica Power House Dam continuing on down to count circle border at Douglas Flat to include all of downtown Murphys and residential area, Murphys Grade Road to count boundary, French Gulch Rd to count boundary, Soapstone Hill, California Conservation Corps area, Wyldewood, Mercer Cave and Stevenot Winery. This area can be divided into two or three parties. Murphys townsite is a good area to walk and include the creek, park, Black Bart Playhouse parking lot, cemetery, and home and field area. The area along 6 mile road is also good. Only about the first mile from Main Street is in our circle. There are some open spots with water to check out and parts of the Kautz vineyards are in our area- also Hay Station Ranch. French Gulch Road to Falcon Mine Rd. and Stevenot Winery are good birding areas. At the winery continue along San Domingo Road for at most 3 miles but the first 2 miles are best with open meadows and creeks. Along Sheep Ranch Road stop and bird each time the habitat changes, the grassy open areas are especially important. Region 9 continues along Sheep Ranch Road from the Stevenot Winery for 1.5 miles ending .5 miles beyond Esmeralda road. There probably isn't much beyond the Farm house in the valley (which is .5 miles from the winery) so after giving that farm (at #3000 Sheep Ranch Road) and valley a good look you could probably turn back at the farm. You could continue on for .7 miles to Esmeralda road which is an unmarked dirt road on your left. About 4 miles of that road is in Region 9 but it is almost impassable in the winter and it isn't a great birding area until the end. It all depends on weather and number of participants how much you cover. Stop at all creeks.
